Humphrey’s Transportation Communication Union (TCU) students participated in National Train Day, an event that drew thousands to the Jackson Street Roundhouse railroad museum. National Train Day is celebrated at depots and railroad museums all over the U.S. on the Saturday closest to May 10th, the anniversary of the Golden Spike that marked the completion of the transcontinental railroad. The event included exhibits, music, train rides and the chance to explore the many engines and cars that are part of the museum. This is a working train yard. After TCU students pass the brake, signal and switch training and certification in the classroom, they intern at the Roundhouse job shadowing trained operators and learning to work safely in a railroad yard. Humphrey TCU student Willie Strom is shown explaining their training program and the Job Corps program that prepares them for advanced opportunities.
