Job Corps 50th Anniversaary

Hubert H Humphrey held its 50th Anniversary Job Corps celebration on August 20th, 2014 It was in two parts: the first portion of the event was a formal recognition ceremony that opened with welcoming remarks by Dave MacKenzie, Center Director, with speakers that included Mayor George Latimer, County Commissioner Janice Rettman, State Senator John Hoffman, Job Corps alumna Dr. Rosella Collins-Puoch, Congresswoman Betty McCollum and U.S. Senator Al Franken. Each one shared a different perspective on the achievements of the program in effectively serving young people over the years and the need to continue that benefit into the future. After the program, Culinary Arts served cupcakes and punch to the crowd as they walked through the displays of each trade and talked to the student exhibitors. Also displayed was a Proclamation by the Mayor of St Paul naming the week of August 18-22 as Job Corps 50th Anniversary week in the city. Then the event moved out to the grounds where the National Guard had set up a climbing wall. There was a photo booth that was very popular with the students and alumnae. The popcorn and sno-cone stands were busy as were the lawn game stations. Some guests chose a quieter pursuit under the guidance of artist Anne Krocak who had laid out a commemorative design for a mosaic composed of colored glass which will be hung in the center as a permanent reminder of the 50th Anniversary.
