Seventeen skilled trade unions participated in a hands-on expo on the grounds of Hubert H Humphrey to give our young people and other students the chance to learn about the building trades and find out about apprenticeships. The unions set up stations around the center’s quad and offered interactive learning. Flooring, Laborers, Safety, Carpenters, Sprinklers, Finishers, Glaziers, Roofers, Limited Energy, Electricians, Heavy Equipment Operators, Iron Workers, Pipe Fitters, Concrete Masons, Plumbers, Sheet Metal and Brickies/Caulkers demonstrated the tools of their trades as participants went from booth to booth. In addition to the Job Corps students, two hundred and fifty students from the greater metro area alternative schools, high schools, the urban teen program Under Construction and Big Brothers Big Sisters soldered pipe, used a Bobcat, glazed a window, laid flooring, crimped pipe, installed ceramic tile, used a simulated paint sprayer, smoothed concrete and much more. Journeyman volunteers answered lots of questions about apprenticeships. It’s a great opportunity for the union apprenticeship programs to reach out to females and minority students. Visiting students also received information about the Job Corps program. It took a lot of volunteers to keep things running smoothly and many of them were from the large construction companies who were visiting the campus for the first time. HH Humphrey hosted the event in partnership with Construct Tomorrow, a non-profit organization whose membership includes trade unions, construction contractors, non-profits and the state apprenticeship program. Based on feedback from all the participants, this was the first of what will be an annual event at HH Humphrey.
