The Cultural Diversity Committee at Hubert H. Humphrey held a combined African American and Women’s History celebration last week. It was the culmination of a series of center activities; there were research contests about both notable women and black Americans that ran in the daily bulletin and the cafeteria served a soul food lunch that was a big hit. The finale was a program which included historical vignettes and the poetry of Maya Angelou (Still I Rise) and Langston Hughes. Sam Karpeh, a CA student with a particular interest in Langston Hughes, read Let America Be America Again. The climax of the program was the Black Panther Steppers, named for our center teams, the Panthers. They had formed a team that was well-rehearsed and performed just like a precision drill team. Black Panther members: Hope Hurd, Tamara Brown Jackson, Uniquia Russell, Princetta Marshall, Damieka McDonald, LaTanga Travis, Diamond Young, Revon Gougis, Cyrus Kulee, Angelika Pace, Diversity Coordinator Alero Ogisi, Jae Notch, Terry Johnson and Kimisha Collins. The students purchased and decorated their own costumes and presented Miss Ogisi with a matching shirt at the end of the performance.
