SGA hosted a Mississippi river trip for all center students that was a fun and informative journey. For many students it was their first experience on the water and definitely their first on a paddlewheel riverboat. The leisurely pace of the boat gave them a chance to see waterfowl and to see geese practicing their “V” formations over the water in anticipation of the winter journey. They also found out how commerce moves on the river, with boats transferring their cargoes to rail cars which go up to the Port of Duluth, through the Great Lakes and then out into the Atlantic. Students learned about the locks and dams on the river and how they work, as the boat went through Lock and Dam #5 going downriver and again on its return. Altogether, it was a beautiful sunny day of learning and life on the river.
