Why is math so fun at Humphrey? What makes students race to solve the tough problems? On Monday, May 7th, students and staff at the Humphrey Job Corps Center celebrated a belated Pi Day. (Pi Day is traditionally observed on March 14th.) The event began with three math instructors (Pam Gabriel, Chris Schottel, and Traci Flicek) from the Academic Department competing in a pie eating contest. The twist? The instructors weren’t allowed to use their hands! After that, twelve students competed mathematically for the opportunity to throw a pie at a staff member. Students were presented with a wide variety of math problems and completed their challenges under timed conditions. The student body had a wonderful time observing the competition. Since the math problems were read aloud, many students in the audience also played along. Pi Day is quickly becoming a fun (and messy!) Humphrey tradition.
