Water Garden installation at local park

Water Garden installation at local park

Looking at these Facilities Maintenance students working amidst the rocks, it may be hard to see the beauty they are helping to create. They are installing the bases for the beautiful water gardens that ring the Como Park Conservatory building. The Conservatory is a half acre of indoor and outdoor gardens, from fern and bonsai rooms to the tropics area, the Japanese gardens, the sunken garden and much more. The water gardens are floating wonderlands of exotic flowers and giant lily pads. The students are standing in the dry pool; water will be added so that it can warm with the sun and, finally, in May, the plants will be installed. In addition to their new knowledge of a specialized kind of planting, students are given a tour behind the scenes by the conservatory staff. The tour includes the boiler system, the chillers, the air conditioning systems, the chemical pump system for the various plantings, and the sophisticated DDC (direct digital control) system that controls the humidity, the temperature and air flow for the various climates in different areas. Many of these are part of their TARs and the students learn more seeing all these processes functioning in real time.
