(Waimanalo, Hawaii) – The Waimanalo Neighborhood Board recognized the Hawaii Job Corps Culinary Team for winning at the Western Region Culinary Expo held in San Francisco. The cooking competition and subsequent ceremony marked the culmination of the region’s largest Culinary Expo, “Dinner is Possible: Cooking Light Challenge,” a four-day event in which students were tested on their culinary knowledge and skill. Dishes were judged for presentation, taste, healthiness, and creativity. Chef Robert Irvine spoke to the students along with Chef Jeff Henderson. Irvine hosts the popular Food Network show “Dinner Impossible.” Henderson hosts “The Chef Jeff Project” on the same network.

Hawaii swept the competition by tying for first place on the knowledge portion and winning the cooking competition. “These four students really applied themselves, they found out first hand that hard work and determination really pays off,” said Instructor Robert Tom.

There was also an individual knowledge award won by culinary student Timothy Pangelinan. “We studied as a team in the evenings after classes and spent most weekends in the kitchen perfecting our dishes” said Pangelinan. The winning menu was a kataifi wrapped shrimp appetizer with a coconut cilantro pesto sauce, asian sashimi slaw with soy vinaigrette, citrus kalbi marinated pork tenderloin kabobs accompanied with baby bok choy and sesame crusted rice cakes. They served a chocolate lava cake with raspberry and passion fruit coulis and a tropical flan sampler for dessert.
