CT’s African-American Affairs Commission Selects HJCA Student for the 13th Annual Classic Awards Ceremony

Sheldon Powdar attends the Hartford Job Corps Academy in Hartford, Connecticut. He is currently a full-time student who has completed his career technical training in the field of Insurance Finance Services. 

Sheldon has served as Vice-President on the Student Government Association.  His functions were to meet with students and staff to address student concerns.  He advocates for students regarding various center issues and is working to improve center life through new initiatives and program promotions. Sheldon is actively involved in his community where he serves as a Student Ambassador.  He represents the Academy by speaking at events, conferences, the Greater Hartford community, as well as in Washington D.C.  In addition to serving in a leadership role, Sheldon has managed the HJCA school store and volunteered at the Boy’s and Girl’s club in Hartford. 

Prior to attending Job Corps, Sheldon participated in an annual fundraising contest and won top honors earning first place in an electronics award.

Sheldon is presently doing his internship at the African-American Affairs Commission (AAAC) where he is gaining experience to further enhance his business skills.  The AAAC mission is to improve and promote the economic development, education, health and political well-being of the African-American community in the State of Connecticut through advocacy, information sharing, cultural awareness, community networking and influencing legislation.  Sheldon continues to learn the value of hard work and is going above and beyond to achieve his goals.

Recently, Sheldon was selected by the AAAC to take part in the Thirteenth Annual Classic Awards.  The event was held on Friday, May 18, 2012, in the atrium of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, CT. The awards ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of African-Americans and their contributions to the State of Connecticut.  Presentations were made to: Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Business and Economic Development and Lifetime Achievement. Most important, two Youth of the Year scholarships were presented to high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence. Speakers were Stan Simpson and Sheldon Powdar.

Sheldon’s career goal is to become the CEO and President of Bank America.  He has made public declarations of his desire to work hard and continue to grow.  He knows that in order to become successful in life he needs to exercise individual accountability, growth, safety, respect, integrity and commitment.
