JOB CORPS As a result of connecting with District Council #9 Painters and Allied Trades Union’s business representatives during last month’s Facilities Maintenance Industry Council Breakfast, Glenmont Job Corps Center Facilities Maintenance students were able to visit the Union’s apprentice classroom in Menands, NY. on Thursday evening, February 11,2016.
Facilities Maintenance Instructors Mr. Chestnut and Mr. Bartley escorted 14 of their students on the trip. While there, students were able to see firsthand how an apprentice learns during their instruction period. FM student Ahmad McPherson was very excited and motivated as a result of what he learned at the DC 9 classroom. He said, “It was amazing! We learned about the phases of the glazing process and learned about doing drywall. We found out that you are an apprentice for three years and after that you can move into welding.” During the visit, the students also got to see the type of job opportunities that exist in their field, which encouraged them to be more serious about their training at GJCC.
Mr. Chestnut and Mr. Bartley are excited about the union’s interest in our students and the possibility of referring GJCC graduates to District Council #9 Painters and Allied Trades Union in the future. We thank Mr. Chestnut and Mr. Bartley for taking the time to make this visit possible.
