On February 2 and February 4, 2016 student leaders from Glenmont Job Corps Center had an opportunity to shadow two elected officials in Albany, NY.  On Tuesday. February 2, 2016 students Nelson Rodriguez, Dajah Charles, and Donatella Crespin shadowed New York State Senator George Amedore. The students had an opportunity to tour the Capitol building located in downtown Albany where leaders from many chambers meet. The students sat in on a session where different topics were discussed, such as how to honor a school or a prominent figure in the community. These three students sat in on several business meetings that Senator Amedore has to attend. Glenmont Job Corps Center SGA President Nelson Rodriguez stated, “I learned that any problem can be solved by putting your mind to it. Senator Amedore is a great man that has a lot on his plate. He is professional and knows what he wants out of life. So I thank him for teaching us a lot of important facts about his district.”

On Thursday, February 4, 2016 students Nelson Rodriguez, Kenny Milord and Julian Shelburne shadowed County Executive Dan McCoy. The students had the opportunity to sit with Mr. McCoy, where he shared some of his personal background and encouraged our youth to finish their education and get involved in their communities. Then, the GJCC students were honored to be a part of a presentation honoring Black History Month. The presentation acknowledged the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, which is a non-profit organization that seeks to promote awareness and understanding of the Under-ground Railroad Movement. Kenny Milord, who assisted in setting up for the program, shared his experience by stating, “I had the opportunity to shadow an intern who worked in Public Relations department. It was really interesting to see some of the tasks needed to assist events held by the County Executive.”

Glenmont Job Corps Center would like to thank Senator Amedore and County Executive Dan McCoy for taking the time out of their busy schedules to allow our students to shadow them.
