On Friday, December 4, 2015 seven Reading 1 students went on a field trip to the Henry Hudson Planetarium. The students in attendance were Tamia Adou-Carter, Davonte Bagby, Demetrius Batts, Wilsi Fernandez, Kianie Joseph, Sheldon Pitts-Garcia, and Kevin Sanchez. These students observed a sky show and explored what an important role astronomy played in the Freedom Seekers’ search along the Underground Railroad. After watching the sky show and learning about how the Freedom Seekers’ used stars to assist them on the Underground Railroad, the students were able to tour the planetarium museum. As part of the museum tour,
the students were able to observe and touch some historical artifacts such as animal skins and ceramics native to Albany. When our tour of the Planetarium was complete, we were able to take a quick tour of the New York State Museum. The students all found items there that were of interest to them. Our field trip was not only fun but educational as well.
