CPP attends Underground Railroad Performance
This week, the CPP/Counseling Department took a group of eleven students to a performance of Freedom Train, a retelling of the life and journeys of Harriet Tubman, at the Palace Theatre in Albany. The performance passed valuable information to the students who attended.
Harriet Tubman was known as a conductor of the Underground Railroad, which was a series of secret hiding places where enslaved blacks people could stay during their escape from slav-ery in the South to the Northern States. The runaway slaves were known as “friends among friends.” These individuals were said to suffer from “drawbita mania,” a term used to describe the Black desire to run away from slavery. The students enjoyed being able to go to the event and learn about the story of Harriet Tubman. The students stated that they had heard of her, but didn’t know much about her life or experiences.
This is only one of the Black History Month events that the GJCC CPP/Counseling Department has in store during the month of Febrary.
