Yasmine Melendez Places 2nd in Local Art Contest
On February 5, 2016, Yasmine Melendez, a Glenmont Job Corps Center Culinary student, won 2nd place in a local contest! The contest, entitled “Faces of Humanity,” challenged young artist to visually communicate their relation to their community or culture by creating a 3-dimensional mask. Each student was supplied with the same mask form and it was up to them to transform it into something unique that communicated their message.
Ms. Ann Marie Morin.,Art Club leader, escorted Yasmine and other students who created masks for the show to the opening reception at The Little Gallery at Sage College in Albany, NY. At the show, there were many beautiful masks from area high schools. The competition was stiff, but Yasmine’s mask stood out in the judges’ eyes. Her work was creative and spoke to them.
Yasmine was surprised and delighted when they called her name to receive her award. She was awarded a $125.00 gift card to purchase art supplies for herself from an art supply catalog. On the way back from center, Yasmine spoke of how she is doing well at GJCC and said, “Things are starting to go my way!”
Art Club thanks Ms. Deborah Snape, Center Director and Mr.Kyle O’Brey, Recreation Supervisor, for supporting Art Club in the GJCC Recreation Center.
