GJC Makes A Difference at Ahana House

Recently a group of Glenmont Job Corps students along with Peer Leadership Coordinator Roland Riggins spent the afternoon bringing a little joy to the residents of Ahana House.

Ahana House is a residential facility for adults living with HIV. The facility houses 15 adults who rarely venture out from the residence, except for medical appointments and some planned activities by residential staff. Visitors to the house are few and far between and the residents expressed extreme delight and gratitude for our students spending time with them.

First, the students volunteered to do some house work, then the fun began. They played pool and cards with the residents. They also received a tour of the facility and learned about the available services that are provided. Next, they shared a meal together and the students talked to the residents and staff about Glenmont Job Corps.

One residents expressed to our students how much the visit meant to her: “We don’t get visitors very often. I really appreciate you all coming to spend time with us” she said. “Is it possible for you guys to come like at least once a month?” asked another resident.

“I really enjoyed this experience,” said student Kristi Sullivan. “It wasn’t what I expected and I learned some things today,” added Nathaniel Bruce.

GJC plans to continue this rewarding volunteer work and will return to Ahana House soon.
