Friday, December 4, 2015: Seven of Glenmont Job Corps Center’s finest volunteered to serve food at the Fashion Express event held at the Egg in Albany’s Empire State Plaza. Culinary Instructor Chef Beth Koster supervised students while Ms. Ann Marie Morin, BCL/OCT Coordinator, drove Corey Mc Laren, Destiny Perez, Shameeka Holman, Emily Stamp, Brendan Dalton, Christina Barnett and Darrell Johnson to the event.
Fashion Express is a fashion design company that is owned and operated by a former Job Corps graduate, Sylvia Jordan. Ms. Jordan wanted to give our students the opportunity to work in a “real world” situation and to build their confidence as professionals. Our students did an outstanding job serving. Some were on the buffet line while others circulated throughout the room making sure elderly, handicapped and vending booth personnel had a plate of food.
This event was not only just a great opportunity for our students. Ms. Morin was delighted by how many local business owners and community members she was able to make contact with. These contacts have resulted in future community service opportunities for our students. When the buffet was over, students attended the fashion show and were impressed with the creativity and the overall presentation of the fashions. Students worked up an appetite and were hungry after the event. On the way back to CenterChef Beth Koster treated the students to Dunkin Donuts. Back on Center, the students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to gain work experience and have fun at the same time.
