Students support national holiday by sending cookies to troops in Iraq

In honor of Veteran’s Day this year, the Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Culinary Arts students baked over 1000 cookies that were sent to a group of soldiers stationed in Iraq. Over 80 empty Pringle cans were filled with cookies and sent to Seargent Bradley Fennema, a Grand Rapids native who is currently serving his 3 tour of duty in Iraq.  Fennema plans to share the cookies with the roughly 50 troops in his unit.

In addition to filling the emptied Pringle cans with cookies, students were given the opportunity to individually decorate the outside of the cans to show their support for the troops and to thank them for their service to our country.

“I would like to personally thank you for your service and the sacrifice you dedicate to our country,” wrote student Deion Johnson in a personal message he scribed on the outside of one of the Pringle cans.  “I myself plan on going into the U.S. Airforce after I leave Job Corps.”

Veterans Day honors the duty, sacrifice and service of America’s nearly 25 million veterans of all wars. The Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center is proud to have students give back to the men and women who are fighting for our country and show support for all the hard work and sacrifices they make on a daily basis. 

“Baking cookies that we know the troops will enjoy while they are away from a home-cooked dessert reminds us to appreciate what we have here at Job Corps,” states Culinary Arts student Demereice Woods.  “It’s the least we can do to honor those fighting for our freedoms.”
