Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Students Give-Away Free Bike Helmets to Keep Kids Safe

In honor of Safety Awareness Month, the Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center, in partnership with Safe Kids Greater Grand Rapids and Helen Devos Children’s Hospital, hosted a Bike Safety Day on Wednesday, June 13.  Community parents were invited to bring their children, who do not have bike helmets, to the Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center parking lot to receive a proper bike helmet fitting and free bike helmet, while supplies lasted.

Every year, nearly 300,000 children receive bike related injuries that require emergency room attention.  Head injuries can lead to brain trauma, and can be easily preventable by properly wearing a bike helmet while riding. With summertime here, families should consider bike helmet safety before letting their children ride.

Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center Security students were trained on how to properly fit a helmet on a child’s head and assisted with the helmet fittings.  Other students greeted the local kids and parents who lined-up in the Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center parking lot to receive their free helmet.

The event was featured on both the morning and evening local Fox 17 News broadcasts.
