Gary Job Corps Students, Staff, Supporters Celebrate National Job Corps Commencement Day

Keynote Speaker Texas House Representative Jason Isaac Applauds Graduates.  Local officials, business leaders, Job Corps staff, students and family members joined 85 students graduating from Gary Job Corps in San Marcos, Texas Tuesday August 30th to celebrate National Job Corps Commencement Day.  Texas House Representative Jason Isaac served as the ceremony’s keynote speaker.  Additionally, Rep. Isaac spoke at the Gary Community Relationsl Council, attended by many elected, civic, and educational representatives.  Job Corps is a unique national program that provides a safe environment for unemployed, undereducated, low-income youth to prepare for successful careers or further education.  Approximtely 60,000students complete the Job Corps program each year at one of 124 centers across the country.  Nationally, about 86% of Job Corps graduates go on to find and keep jobs, continue to higher education or enlist in the military.  “I am very optimist today about the students I met a the Gary Job Corps Center”, Texas State Representative Isaac said in Tuesday’s keynote address at the Community Relations Council and Graduation Ceremonies.  “You (at the Gary Center) are training for the jobs of tomorrow, today”.  Since Job Corps was created 47 years ago, it has served more than 3 million out-of-work young adults and underserved youth nationally.  Many are high-school dropouts or public-assistance recipients, and Job Corps helps them become active contributors to their communities.  Tuesday’s event marks the first time ever that the majority of the nation’s 124 Job Corps centers have held commencement celebrations on  the same day.  “If you can Dream it, Gary Job Corps can help you achieve it,” said Lonnie Hall, the Center Director.  “Job Corps is not your Last Chance, it is your Best Chance”.  Gary Job Corps also promotes local job creation and economic support.  For every dollar invested in the average Job Corps center, almost $2 is returned to the local economy.  “Gary Job Corps continues to serve as an essential education and workforce development resource where young people can pursue a diploma, trade skills or career training to make them competitve within an ever-changeing global market.”  Said Daniel Guerrero, Mayor, City of San Marcos.  “The City of San Marcos is proud to be the home of the largest Job Corps Program in the Nation”.
