Faces of Job Corps: Wendy M.

Wendy was born in McAllen, Texas, but raised in Reynosa, Mexico.  She moved to the United States in 1994, unable to speak or write English.  She attended Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Texas, and was a vivacious learner.  “Thanks to them,” she says, “I learned almost everything I know now.”

She earned her General Education Diploma (GED), studied English, and learned about computers and business software.  After completing the trade curriculum at the advanced level, she enrolled at Austin Community College in their Associate of Science in Business Administration.  She attended night and Saturday courses while working full time as a Webmaster at Department of Labor Job Corps Data Center.  She earned her AS degree in two years and then enrolled in the BS program at Capella University in June 2000.

Despite a heavy workload of 3 and 4 courses per quarter, Wendy maintained a 3.7 GPA and she managed to graduate in 2001, earning a place in Capella University history as the first BS graduate in the School of Technology.  Three years later, she also graduated from the MS in Information Technology as well as enrolled in the PHD in Business from Capella University while working for companies such Lockheed Martin and Rackspace.

Wendy an Entrepreneur at heart first took her skills and knowledge for the development of a Web Design & Development business for the creation of Bilingual Web Sites for small business owners in Texas and Mexico.

W’s. second chance in business was Go2Danz Studio.  A dancer since a very young age, her dreams didn’t come true until 2008.  W. had been a choreographer since she was living in Mexico, and also the sole choreographer at Gary Job Corps Center back in 94 – 97 with the Urban Latin Dance Troupe.  A strong believer of promoting Mexican Culture among the new generations, she kept being part of the Folklorico Dance Team.

After graduating from Gary Job Corps Center, she wanted to go to dance school, but being a strong believer of Higher Education, she decided to enroll in Computer related fields, instead of Dance.  She knew that dancing was her passion, but she needed to get a different career.

In 2007, she first heard about Zumba.  ZUMBA is a fusion of Latin and International music/dance themes creating a dynamic, exciting, effective fitness system!   In 2008, she decided to take the lead and became certifified as a Zumba Instructor with Beto Perez, the creator of Zumba.  It was then, when she decided to open her own Dance Studio ‘Go2Danz’

The focus of Go2Danz Studio is to continue to promote a vibrant culture through both the traditional and contemporary forms of different styles of dance, such as: Zumba, Salsa, HipHop, Contemporary, Belly Dance and much more.  Wendy’s personal mission is to vision environments where people can learn together so that they express true nature while keeping in shape and having tons of fun.
