On today, the Flint Genesee Job Corps Center staff was notified by National Director, Edna Primrose and Regional Director Dr. Francis Cole that Secretary Hilda Solis was in the area and wanted to make an impromptu visit to the Flint Genesee Job Corps Center. We were excited to know she was coming although we had all of ten minutes notice!   The Secretary was accompanied by the City of Flint Mayor, Dayne Walling, and Youngstown Ohio Mayor Jay Williams (whom the Secretary has recently announced his new role as the Director of the Office of Recovery for Autoworkers and Communities), touring the Single Parent Dormitory,  Child Development Center and meeting with the entire staff during a training session being held the Recreation Center. During the remaining tour of the Center,  Secretary Solis and Center Director, Jean Hill  discussed Center statistics, highlights of our committed CRC/CIC membership, and student (graduate) achievements: Class Valedictorian and Salutatorian with Flint Community Schools, and five Urban Scholars program recipients, and the home of the National Job Corps Student Oratorical Winner.  Before visiting the Flint/Genesee Job Corps Center, Secretary Solis toured the Diplomat Pharmacy (a partner of Flint/Genesee) and had met with representatives from Congressman Dale Killdee’s and Senator Carl Levin’s offices, both strong supporters of the Job Corps program.

After an aproximate 45 minute visit, many pictures and tweets to her DOL site, all left vowing to return for the “long tour” on the next visit.
