The Flint Genesee Job Corps Center recognized “Make a Difference Day”, the largest national day of helping others – a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors, in a big way. Students in all trades were seen throughout the city of Flint, giving back and “making a difference” in various activities. Students in the hard trades (construction, masonry, and painting) worked along with the Habitat for Humanity in their development of the fourth new home in Flint for a deserving, needy family. Other students from the Retail Sales and Security training classes assisted with clean up of debris, beautification, and landscaping of homes which will be under construction soon. The Hospitality Class, working with Keeping Genesee County Beautiful, raked leaves and picked up debris sprawled along the I-475/Hamilton Exit; the Dental Assistant students helped organize and sort cloths at the Carriage House Ministries; Office Administration students sorted food items for the upcoming holiday at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan; the Hispanic Technology Center was delighted to see students from the Computer Repair Class who not only repaired computers, painted the center and cleaned the outside area; students in the Career Transition Readiness (CTR) Class utilized their acquired skills at the Children’s Museum sorting books and toys, presenting tours, and constructing new buildings for small children to play; the elected Student Government Association (SGA) made collections from the student body, which was donated to the Weiss Advocacy, which aids young children who have been severely abused. The Centers Wellness Department also participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, with monetary donations to that organization as well.
The students of the Flint/Genesee Job Corps Center are appreciative of the opportunity to reach out into the community, give back, and show that they too can make a difference – staff are proud of their work!
