EJCA Culinary Arts student Sean Austin discussed with the Honorable Governor Lincoln D. Chafee the intricacies of the Rhode Island Lighthouse design of the gingerbread house. November 26, 2011
Culinary Arts students built several large gingerbread houses this year to support center outreach efforts and they were delivered to some very significant sites. One spectacular site was the Rhode Island State House where the gingerbread house was displayed in the State Room as a highlight for the State House holiday celebration activities. The Honorable Governor Lincoln D. Chafee met with Culinary students and center staff to provide a tour of the RI State Room, discussed the grand Rhode Island history represented in the room as well as the State House. Governor Chafee was thrilled with the gingerbread house and the Rhode Island connection with the lighthouse design. The gingerbread house was the center piece on the reception table for the annual tree lighting and celebration on December 6th, 2011. EJCA student Sean Austin pointed out several features of the gingerbread house to the Governor and explained how the water was made as well as the seagulls, anchors, trees and people.
Governor Chafee delighted in showing EJCA students that RI artist Gilbert Stuart was honored when his portrait of George Washinton, our nation’s first president, was put on the US dollar bill. A good time was had by all and it is starting to be a great holiday season.
Other recipients of themed gingerbread houses were the historical Smith Castle – North Kingstown, Welcome House Homeless Shelter – Peace Dale, Kent County YMCA – Warwick, South Kingstown Senior Center – Wakefield, Davisville Library – North Kingstown,
