Excelsior Springs, MO August 19, 2015. Excelsior Springs Job Corps students enrolled in the Security and Protective Services Trade had an opportunity to expand their education beyond the traditional classroom. Students got a first-hand look at how the police, courts and corrections work in the state with a tour of the Jackson County Department of Corrections. During the visit students were able to learn from corrections officers about their job duties, the structure of the corrections system, and the challenges of their work. Students also learned about the daily routine of the facility, security measures and services the inmates receive while they are placed in the facility. The tour’s purpose was for students to integrate experimental learning into the course. Students are encouraged to identify how psychological and sociological theories regarding delinquency are observed in the current corrections systems. Prevention, intervention and treatment models are also evaluated for their individual strengths and weaknesses. The Jackson County Department of Corrections in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, like all jails is a maximum security facility. Because the inmates in this jail range from low level offenders to those being held for violent crimes like robbery, rape and murder, the security level is as high as it is in any maximum security state prison. Correctional officers in Jackson County are armed with mace and trained to use physical force to protect themselves and other inmates from violence. The facility houses 815 beds between the men, women and juveniles being held in Jackson County who are either awaiting trial or have already been sentenced in the Jackson County Court System and been sentenced to a period of time of one year or less. Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center is equipping students for a life of learning, leadership, and service; integrating learning and living; and empowering graduates to excel and to positively impact their world.
