Job Corps earning its keep in Edison
5:31 PM, Mar. 27, 2012
One of the most important keys to Edison’s economic recovery is the Edison Job Corps, which partners with our local leaders, community groups and businesses to help young people overcome their challenges and become hard-working, taxpaying members of our community.
We at AK Systems have been engaging Job Corps’ students as interns for our I.T help-desk and infrastructure support department. Job Corps’ training combined with the internship at our site helps the students to present a more convincing profile to their future employer and succeed in their career. Job Corps is a much-needed facilitator to prepare skilled resources at affordable salaries for entry-level jobs which are needed in today’s economy by small and midsize organizations.
By giving the training to economically disadvantaged youth, Job Corps helps them “learn to earn’” for the rest of their lives. Thereby, Job Corps helps reduce their dependence on government subsidy; and helps these youths avoid slipping into crime and anti-social activities.
Edison Job Corps is one of 125 centers across the country that serve about 60,000 students each year. At Edison Job Corps, 530 youths from New Jersey reside and study in the area of construction, IT, healthcare, clerical, hospitality and automotive. Approximately 86 percent of graduates go on to find and keep jobs, pursue higher education or enlist in the military.
Fortunately, our elected officials recognize the important role Job Corps plays. I appreciate the support of Edison’s mayor, members of our congressional delegation, the governor and community leaders and hope they will continue to work hard to ensure an investment in Job Corps, which helps our young people, boosts our local economy and supports private-sector jobs.
Job Corps works in New Jersey.
