Having a partnership with Sansone Automotive Group, which serves customers in the NY metropolitan area with distinction for the past 50 years, is greatly appreciated by the staff and students from the United Auto Workers – Labor Employment and Training Corporation (UAW-LETC ) Advanced Automotive program at the Edison Job Corps Academy. A relationship that has started in August of 2010 thanks to a former UAW-LETC employee, Rich Liebler, now a Fixed Operations Director at Sansone’s Auto Mall in Avenel NJ, has provided countless students with internship opportunities. UAW-LETC program that operates at the Edison Job Corps Academy since January of 2010 and provides students with hands on experience program has earned Master Automobile Repair Certifications from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE).
In addition, UAW-LETC received Master Certifications in Collision Repair and Refinishing, as well as Medium/Heavy Truck Repair. The Master Certification is the highest achievement recognized by NIASE. All students are prepped for ASE certification tests prior to graduation. Additionally, up to a year spent in the program counts toward ASEs required two (2) years of on-the-job experience. To ensure training parallels industry standards, UAW-LETC curriculum is based on the National Automotive Technician Education Foundations (NATEF) task list for all segments of the training program.
Program prepares students to be educated in area of electrical/electronic systems, brakes, suspension and steering, engine performance, heating and air-conditioning, engine repair, manual drive train and axles, automatic transmission/transaxle and hybrid technology.
All trainees who possess a driver’s license, are referred to Sansone based on their performance in UAW-LETC program. This internship, known in Job Corps terminology as work-based learning, offers students a unique opportunity to learn as an apprentice with a Master Technician. Sansone’s Auto Mall in Avenel NJ, where students conduct their work based learning, is the leading New Jersey dealer in volume and customer satisfaction. At this location customers can choose from 12 automobile leading brands and the area’s largest selection of Certified Preowned vehicles.
Upon successful screening most of the students start as assistant technicians. Up-to-date a total of eight students were hired upon completion of their internship, and their job titles range from parts person to lube technician. All of the service managers have positive things to say about Edison Job Corps student’s knowledge, performance and attitude.
