The Edison Job Corps Business Community Liaison, Julia Ruth Gibson and carpentry students celebrated Juneteenth with the NAACP this weekend at Riverside Park in Piscataway. The holiday that commemorates the liberation of the last remaining slaves in the United States. The festivities featured music, dance, food vendors and Job Corps students. The students had the opportunity to showcase their skills with an on stage competition with guests from the audience. The students also discussed their vision for the future and how the Job Corps program has changed their lives.
Job Corps is a program administered by the United States Department of Labor that offers free-of-charge education and vocational training to young men and women ages 16 to 24. The students were proud to discuss their program and contribute to supporting the community. Job Corps is currently accepting students that are focused on gaining a quality education and learning a trade. The Business Community Liaison explained the trades available at Job Corps and the purpose of the program on enriching the lives of students to help them learn a trade and gain a career path in Carpentry, Electrical, Culinary, Office Administration, Information Technology, Auto, Plumbing, HVAC, Bricklaying and Building Construction and become successful professionals utilizing the skills learned at Job Corps.
