The water flowing down the Missouri River is threatening to flood thousands of acres of land and destroy homes, businesses and even entire towns. Citizens, businesses, and farmers were scrambling to protect themselves. A call for assistance to fill sand bags from Missouri Valley put Denison Job Corps students in action. A bus full of volunteers loaded shovels and sun screen and traveled to provide assistance. The temperatures were hot, reaching 100 degrees, but the need to help was greater. Sand bags were filled and tied. Moving the bags containing 50 to 79 pounds of sand to the nearby pallets was an exhausting exercise.
Another small town, Blencoe called to ask for assistance. Blencoe had only nine volunteers for this overwhelming task the day before. The students loaded the bus for a second day. This day had more students volunteering and more staff who were willing to readjust their schedules for this worthy cause. Again the sun beat down but their hard work filled the many bags that were continuously carried away on pallets to thankful businesses and home owners. With Blencoe being so small in population, the work would not have moved forward as it did without the Denison Job Corps muscle. Students will be assisting as needed with the floods in this region.
City officials from both Missouri Valley and Blencoe expressed their appreciation for the help from the Denison Job Corps.
