An F-3 tornado hit Mapleton, IA causing total destruction of homes, cars, trucks, boats, and businesses of that small western Iowa town. Debris littered the residential area as well as surrounding countryside. Along with the Red Cross, Salvation Army, neighboring organizations and many community schools, students of the Denison Job Corps assisted in the clean-up. With rakes in hand and determination to assist, students worked long hours for several days to pick up and clean up the mess that was left behind. Residents shared stories of the event with the helpers as they also expressed their gratitude for the student’s help. Staff of the Denison Job Corps Center had a ‘jean’ day raising money to assist this community in their recovery. The devastation and property loss is very near to the hearts of Iowan’s as thousands of people worked for days, lending a helping hand. The positive part of this story is there was no loss of life. Because most Iowa homes have basements, residents had ample time to take cover and lives were saved.
