Collbran Job Corps Center and Recycling and Trash Audit

Collbran Job Corps Center has had an active recycling program for the past four years.  The center recycles paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminum.  There are recycling containers throughout the center.  The recycling crew under Ms. Evonne Stites, Ms. Michelle Stats and Mr. Bill Kidder help students collect and maintain recyclables.  Once a month, the students help Mr. Kidder load up the recyclables to be taken to the recycling center in Grand Junction, Colorado.  It is quite an undertaking-we all produce a lot of stuff to recycle.

Welding recycles all their metal.  They are assisted by culinary arts which recycles all the food cans.  A metal dealer picks up all this saved metal and trades it for new metal for the welding shop.  Centers really can collect a lot of large metal objects that can be traded to metal dealers.  Last year, over two tons of metal was collected and traded for welding shop supplies.  Think of the savings in landfills and energy!

Quarterly, Ms. Stites and Ms. Michelle, along with their trusty trash crew, do the trash audit.  All areas save their trash for 24 hours.  It is then picked up, emptied out on tarps, sorted and weighed.  The results are sent in to the National Office as directed.  It is interesting to see how much less trash is available on each audit because of recycling.
