Collbran Job Corps and “Tamale Day”

Collbran Job Corps Center is actively involved with the local Migrant and Children Services organization.  Our area is agricultural and there are many migrant workers and families from spring to fall.  Our center helps to serve meals, provide interpreters, help with their food bank and any other way the center can be of assistance.

Once a month we assist the Council in making tamales.  This is the Migrant and Children Services main fund-raiser.  The tamales are very popular but require a lot of work.  Every month, our students go to the council and spend the day making tamales to sell.  There are usually 8-10 students, along with our staff and council staff to make approximately 1,000.00 tamales!  They break for a home-made lunch usually posole or menudo and tortillas.  The students get home-cooked Mexican food which they always say reminds them of home!

We want to thank Mrs. Martinez-Laird, one of our staff nurses for spear-heading this event every month.  She also manages the weekly trips when the workers are all here.
