The Cleveland Job Corps Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

To celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., students and staff of the Cleveland Job Corps Center joined people across the country to serve the community. Volunteering is an important part of the Cleveland Job Corps mission, and students and staff participated in various events this month.

On January 20, 2019, Cleveland Job Corps Center Guided Steps student members enjoyed a remarkable reward for their services at the “42nd Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration” at Playhouse Square. The annual birthday celebration is hosted by Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C), this year they requested the assistance of Cleveland Job Corps Center students. The students greeted attendees at the door and escorted them to their seats. After they completed their assignments, students were provided front stage seats and backstage access, where they met 11-time Grammy winner and First Lady of Gospel Music, Shirley Caesar. They also enjoyed performances from orchestras, speeches, and met Cleveland 19 News Anchor, Tiffani Tucker.

Cleveland Job Corps Center Y2Y Ambassador – Janet Gamble (Clinical Medical Assistant), Safety Cadet President – Anna Duncan (Pharmacy Technician), Matthew Tropkoff (Carpentry), Brandon Harris (Medical Office Support), and Jasmine Crawford (Medical Office Support) accompanied by Residential Advisor, Jasmen Woodson assisted the activity staff at McGregor Nursing Home on Martin Luther King (MLK) Day of Service. They helped transport senior residents to an MLK program held in-house on Monday, January 21, 2019. Students were excited to give back and enjoyed conversing and getting wisdom from the senior residents of McGregor Nursing Home.
At the Greater Cleveland Food Bank Y2Y, Ambassador – Janet Gamble (Clinical Medical Assistant), Safety Cadet President – Anna Duncan (Pharmacy Technician), Matthew Tropkoff (Carpentry), and Kianna Norflet (Bricklayer) sorted and repacked perishable and non-perishable food for distribution to local food pantries, soup kitchen, and shelters on January 24, 2019.
