Meet Dahja Smith

My Life before Job Corps was typical; I was hanging with the wrong crowds, easily influenced, quick-tempered, and very angry. I had many family issues that were taking a toll on me and what I wanted to become. I couldn’t afford college, but Job Corps would be the stepping stone to my career. I joined the Cleveland Job Corps Center on January 22, 2018.
Although I encountered a few difficulties at Job Corps, it came with many rewards. I met wonderful influencers in the way of staff. Every one of them played a huge role in helping me transition into a young woman. I received my Clinical Medical Assistant, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, and HIPAA Privacy & Security Training for Covered Entities Certifications. On October 16, 2018, I graduated from Job Corps and joined AmeriCorps Southwest Region.
While in AmeriCorps, I grew into myself; the program allowed me to embrace my loud and weird ways. AmeriCorps also helped me pay for college and taught me the importance of being a team player. I received a Congressional Award for the volunteer work I did.
I am a student at Southwestern Michigan College. Currently, I am studying to become a Registered Nurse at Southwestern Michigan College. I will graduate from the program in 2023.
The best thing about Job Corps is that it is full of options and the pathway to numerous opportunities. Knowledge is the key to success, and Failure ends when we beat the odds!
