On August 15, 2016, the Cleveland Job Corps Center hosted a “Social Development Open House” for student mentees and their assigned staff mentors to spend the day together engag-ing in a variety of leisure activities and visit-ing mentees dorms. The purpose of the Social Development Open House was to build strong cooperative relationships between students and staff. Additionally, it allowed staff members from the education and trade department an opportunity to socialize with residential staff members and to ob-serve the daily functions of the residential living department.
The Social Development Open House began at 11:30 a.m., allowing staff men-tors to enjoy lunch with their mentee. After that, mentees gave dorm tours and showed their mentors their dorm rooms. Social Development Director, Woody Allen stated “students were excited about their mentors visiting their rooms.” Students and staff engaged in various activities that included an obstacle course, talent show, 3 on 3 basketball, pool, board games and much more. These activi-ties where organized by each department and included training on one of the Career Success Standards. In addition to strengthening the mentorship relations between staff and students, the open house gave everyone an opportunity to come together as a family and further their knowledge of the Career Success Standards. This type of guidance enhances center life, the relationship between students and staff, and aids students in becoming productive members of the community.
