On Saturday, August 27, 2016, thirty-five Cleveland Job Corps Center stu-dents and staff arose early to volunteer at the National African-American Male Wellness 5K Walk & Run. The Na-tional African-American Male Well-ness Initiative raises awareness about preventable health conditions that are prevalent in the African-American male community. The free event was held at Wade Oval Park and open to the entire community regardless of gender, age, or ethnicity. There were activities for the en-tire family, including health screenings, educational resources, music and more.
Cleveland Job Corps students and staff supported the cause by assisting with the health screenings, measuring glucose levels, providing directions, registering partic-ipants, and handing out water. The students confidently demonstrated the skills they have learned in the classroom as well as soft skills previously learned. They were also able to take part in the 5K walk and run event.
Students and staff alike enjoyed the day and were proud to help support the cause. As an incentive for the students that gave so freely of their time and services, were exempt from closed dorms and earned community service hours. WAY TO GO CLEVELAND JC…YOU ROCK!!!
