“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” Martin Luther King Junior. This year, the Cleveland Job Corps Center responded to that question by not just volunteering for one day, but throughout the week. Volunteering is part of the Cleveland Job Corps culture on Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service, as well as throughout the year.
In 1983, the third Monday of January was designated as a federal holiday to commemorate the January 15th birthday of Martin Luther King. However, President Bill Clinton signed legislation that transformed the holiday into a day of volunteer service 1994.
Seventy-three students and eight staff members of the Cleveland Job Corps Center honored Dr. King’s legacy by performing seven service projects that helped strengthen the community, connect organizations and humbled the individuals involved.
The volunteers served at the Salvation Army, City Mission – Laura’s Home Women’s Crisis Center, McGregor Nursing Home, FAMICO’S, Cleveland Food Bank, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center with dates ranging from January 14 -19, 2017. Their service encompassed serving veterans, feeding the homeless, cleaning, organizing, patient care, unloading food trucks, food distribution, packaging food trucks, and marching in a parade.
