Cleveland Job Corps Student Success Story

Meet… Kadar Chavis
Age: 20
Hometown: Richmond Heights, Ohio
Center: Cleveland Job Corps
Enrollment Dates: 12/10/18 – 12/03/19
Career Training Area: Building Construction Technology

After dropping out of school during his senior year, Kadar Chavis’s foster mother signed him up for Job Corps. “I didn’t make the decision to enroll in Job Corps, my foster parents did,” explained Kadar. “But I am grateful that they did, because I had lost my way.”

During Kadar’s enrollment at the Cleveland Job Corps, he had to learn to control his anger as well as how to listen and communicate effectively. He earned his high school diploma from Penn Foster, in addition to his Building Construction Technology (BCT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 and Scaffolding certifications. Kadar appreciates the staff who were patient with him, encouraged him to stay focused, and took the time to listen to him when he was struggling.

Kadar is working in Facility Maintenance at the Grand Point Health Care Hospital. He is working towards securing his own apartment and a car. He aspires to eventually leave the state and start his own business. “Cleveland Job Corps changed me mentally and pushed me into a better, successful life,” stated Kadar.
