His uncle, Cleveland Job Corps Center Residential Advisor, Ronald Overbee encouraged Mr. Roper to enroll in the Job Corps program where he could get credentials in Facility Maintenance. Initially, Mr. Roper was apprehensive about enrolling in Job Corps but decided to listen to his uncle.
Mr. Roper enrolled into Job Corps on October 21, 2015, to embark in a new career pathway. He successfully completed his HBI Facility Maintenance certification and in May of 2016, he began a Work Based Learning Internship at John Carroll University where he exceeded his required work based learning hours by 140, for a total of 320 hours. Due to his exceptional work ethic and willingness to learn new skills, the University hired him for their University’s Facilities Maintenance Department.
Mr. Roper plans to further his education at the Cuyahoga Community College and study business so that he can start his own business; following in the foot-steps of his brothers and other family members. When asked about his experience at Job Corps, Mr. Roper stated that he was very happy that he came to Job Corps because he would have never met the people who help changed his life. His advice to other students, “Stay focused and with a positive attitude you will succeed in life.”
