The American Heart Association hosted the 6th Annual Power of Laughter Health Workshop & Comedy Luncheon at the Embassy Suites of Independence Ohio on May 21, 2016. Keynote speaker Comedian & Recording Artist, Vickie Winans, shared her story pertaining to the loss of her father. She expressed that she was extremely passionate and very fond of The American Heart Association and their mission. The 6th Annual POL Luncheon featured a hearthealthy lunch, free health screenings, silent auction, vendors, exhibitors, and an educational workshop. The luncheon used comedy to share the message of heart and stroke prevention, risk factors and warning signs. Cleveland Job Corps Center (CJCC) volunteers; Nursing Assistant students Midoriasha Desotelle, Toniesha Johnson, and Debra Smith Taylor as well as CJCC Medical Assistant students Havelyn Bowens, Samantha Russo, and
Elizabeth Shaffer accompanied by their teachers Jameka D. Bloom LPN, STNA Instructor and Angela Laureano, CMA Instructor arrived at the Embassy Suites at 9 am for their assignment. Team Cleveland Job Corps began the morning assisting American Heart Association board members stuffing 500 giveaway bags and placing the bags and floral arrangements on the tables.
Then, Team Cleveland Job Corps was escorted to the CPR room where the students had the opportunity to showcase their CPR skills and provide visual aids on the television via DVD to attendees. Each individual that participated in the CPR educational workshop received a free toolkit that contained an educational tutorial DVD on how to perform CPR, and an inflatable mannequin for practicing chest compressionsand rescue breaths. “I was amazed at the culture diversity and various demographics of the hundreds of attendees,” stated Ms. Bloom. “There were teens, young adults, middle-age adults, and late adulthood all being represented.”CJCC Records Manager, Shirley Tucker and Business Community Liaison, Harriet Hadley were also in attendance as they provided CJCC promotional materials at an exhibit table. The event showcased twenty plus exhibit tables ranging from broadcasting media, Insurance Companies, nursing agencies, Nursing Associations, Collegiate Organizations, and various Hospitals within the community. “The Cleveland Job Corps students did a wonderful job sharing their experiences about how Job Corps changed their lives in a positive way to interested individuals.” voiced Ms. Hadley.
