Faces of Job Corps: Terry Lee Medicine Crow

Terry Lee Medicine Crow is from McLaughlin, South Dakota and the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. In 1986 he graduated from high school and did not have the financial resources to attend college, so in 1989 he decided to enroll in the Clerical Word Processing vocation at Clearfield Job Corps , graduating the same year.

He is extremely grateful to Clearfield Job Corp for opening the doors of opportunity. “My first impression was a wonderful experience there, especially the Orientation Program” says Terry. He volunteered to be a mentor in the program and thoroughly enjoyed meeting new students’. He went on to become an honor dorm officer, student of the month, vocational student of the month and participated in the Pre-military program.

The career counseling department helped Terry contact a Navy recruiter to enlist in the Navy as a military police officer. Terry served 10 years in the military and was deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1990. He signed up for the Montgomery G.I. Bill program while in the Navy and earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from the Community College of the Navy in 1992 Before suffering a combat related injury and receiving a medical discharge from the Navy.

Terry used his GI Bill to further his education. In 2003, he enrolled at the United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, North Dakota graduating with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Business and Tribal Management. In 2006, he transferred to Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas and enrolled in the Business Administration Degree program graduating in 2008 with an Associate of Arts in Business.

Aa a senior in the Business Administration program at Haskell and he graduated in December 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Tribal Management. He has taken the Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT) and has applied to the School of Law at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

I had the opportunity to make friends from all over the U.S. I feel that were it not for Job Corp, I would not be where He is at today. Job Corps has empowered me academically, intellectually and provided a more than adequate foundation for a wonderful future”, says Terry.
