The newly created Charleston Corps Center’s basketball team existed for only a couple of weeks before they faced off with the Whitney M. Young, Jr., Job Corps Center. While the fledgling team was narrowly defeated 40-36, the team learned the value of working together as a team and exhibiting sportsmanship behavior.

“I’m proud of our team,” said Mitzi DeBeer, Charleston Job Corps Center’s director. “They put their all into learning to work as a team and they played a fantastic game. Going forward, I know they will continue to hone their game and bring us victories to celebrate. Meanwhile, we’re celebrating getting the team up and running and applauding their effort to create a close score.”

The Charleston and Whitney M. Young centers are collaborating to schedule the next game. The goal is to expand basketball into a regional league that gives players (and their fans) an opportunity to root for their centers throughout the season.
