Read Across America Day celebrated with Westside-Mary C Snow Elementary
Charleston Job Corps Center chose Westside Mary C. Snow Elementary School for National Read Across America Day on March 1. Students Tre Williams, Maverick Clay and Taveon Newby read to each of the three first grade classes while wearing a red cowboy hat, just like the character ‘Woody’ from Toy Story as all were story tellers in each classroom, while our Mascot, Petie the Panther, portrayed by Jontavius Robinson, aroused excitement and cheers as many pulled him by the tail. Each classroom was asked if they were aware of who’s birthday is today?… student’s flung hands in the air awaiting to be called on to give the answer…”Dr. Suess” with bright and cheerful smiles. Dr. Suess was notable for his books which have inspired young readers for many years. Every student was given a book and were instructed to take home and read with their parents. Charleston Job Corp Students enjoyed the experience and stated they would be willing to read to students again! Jontavius , better known as Petie for the day, was excited to have been able to experience this occasion. Watching the students light up with the appearance of Petie, was the highlight of his day.The event was one of many across the country in honor of the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day, which is officially March 2, in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The national Job Corps program joined the NEA several years ago and also created Reading to Lead, its own reading initiative to help people improve their reading skills. Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults to celebrate the power of words.
