Charleston Job Corps’ Student Hardwire Project
New Wave Network, a Charleston Job Corps student enterprise, has taken on the task of enhancing the internet services now available in the dorms by installing hardwire Cat6e cabling that complements the fiber optic cabling already installed throughout the center. In all technological settings, complaints deserve to be addressed. The “by any means necessary” approach is emphasized in the Network and Cabling training provided at the Charleston Job Corps Center. ” Charles Singleton, Instructor states, “You’re only as good as your last job.”
“The internet has been a persistent issue on campus for students during my tenure at Charleston Job Corps”, says Singleton. There are too many devices using the wireless services, so New Wave Network, has chosen to withdraw some of these devices from the WiFi network, such as gaming systems, laptops, and desktop computers, and replace them with hardwire connections. The goal is to use the single Cat6e drop in the room and add your own switch or use a third-party switch. We picked Cat6e cable in the dorms to match the fiber optics, which means the speed will not suffer as much as it does elsewhere on campus. In most cases, Cat5 cable connects the remainder of the workstations, effectively obviating the need for fiber optics in the first place.
In the past, classes the amount of students outweighed the work available. However, COVID-19 has allowed a smaller class to promote student and staff safety. There are only 5 students doing the work. These students have been in the Network and Cabling class and have ran 44 of the cables for the Obama and Chavez dorms. They are: Clyde Hutton, Shakeim Fleshman, Destiny Davis, Brett Williams and Kyle Mason. Destiny and Kyle are current OA students who continue to enjoy their work and are assisting the other students. Taking OA and Network Cabling is a fantastic way to combine the two for their future. They’ve done an excellent job, keeping the entire student body in mind. The major goal is to enhance the center, and they are delighted to be a part of it. Singleton and New Wave Network hope students are satisfied with the work of their peers.
