June is Universal Safety Month and the Charleston Job Corps Center will participate and host several activities. Corporal Brian Jones, Charleston Police Dept. addressed students and staff on Monday, June 16, 2014 regarding Driving Distractions and Texting while driving. Cpl. Jones stated, “Texting is very serious and you will receive a fine in the state of West Virginia.” According to Distractions.gov “Distracted driving is any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving.” Jones informed students and staff on the importance of wearing safety belts by stating, “Safety belts save lives. It is important to wear a safety belt.” He displayed pictures of car crashes with fatalities from distracted drivers and reported statistics from the student’s home states. The presentation is timely and serves as a reminder for students who will return home for summer break June 27-July 14, 2014. The center will sponsor a student poster contest on “Drinking While Driving” and participate in a Disaster Preparedness Drill on Monday, June 23, 2014 in Huntington, WV. Students will be accompanied by Gary Evans, Safety Officer, Jeffrey Burdette, Security Manager and Tia Welch, Business Community Liaison.
