The Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) operating under Horizons Youth Services (HYS) held a center wide Black History program on February 25, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. in the center gymnasium. The theme for this event was “A meeting Among My Brothers & My Sisters.” Tierah Williams, Recreation Advisor served as mistress of ceremony. Students Shanequa Lewis portrayed Madame C.J. Walker and student Jeremiah Elam portrayed Malcolm X.
Guest pastors from the local area portrayed notable African-Americans including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by Rev. Ronald English, Nelson Mandela by the Rt. Reverend Emanuel A. Heyliger and Huey Newton by Rev. Ricardo Flippin. CJCC Counselor, Frances Shearin presented the “The Angry Black Woman” and the debunked the stereotype by encouraging attendees, especially women to know who they are and love themselves through her “ABC” analogy. The event was sponsored by the Recreation Dept.
Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16-24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. The Charleston Job Corps Center is overseen by the Philadelphia Regional Office of Job Corps and is operated by Horizons Youth Services.
