The Charleston Job Corps Center joined centers across the nation for the Y2Y (Youth-2-Youth) Campaign: Partners for Peace. The campaign officially begins Sept. 14-18, 2015, but will be ongoing with various events, speakers and activities. Y2Y Campaign is student driven to address preventing violence on Job Corps centers and their local communities. Safety is our #1 Priority!
CJCC kicked-off the week with guest speaker, Sergeant Paul Purdue, Charleston Police Department, Public Service Unit during the Monday Business Meeting. “Violence does not have to transpire. There are other ways to handle conflict” says Perdue. He shared his personal and work experiences dealing with violence and what it means to protect and serve. “I’m a police officer, because I care” said Sergeant Perdue.
Students and staff participated in a community walk down Kanawha Blvd culminating at Magic Island where they released orange, black and white balloons following remarks from our center director, Willie Brown. Additional events this week include, Student-led Focus Group on Thursday, Sept. 17 and Residential block party on Friday, Sept. 18, 2015. If you would like to partner to prevent violence on Job Corps centers and the local community through your organization or coalition, please contact Tia Welch, Business Community Liaison (304) 925-3200.
