The Charleston Job Corps students and staff wear Red T-shirts in honor of Heart Disease Awareness Month on Friday Feburary 28, 2014.
What is heart disease? Heart disease – also called cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease – is a simple term used to describe several problems related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke. These diseases, the Nation’s No.1 and No.4 killers, claim more than 813,804 American lives a year. The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization working to prevent, treat and defeat heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular disease. The Charleston Job Corps center aims to educate students and staff on positive behaviors for healthy lifestyles.
