Charleston Job Corps Center celebrates Earth Day, April 22, 2013

The Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) operating under Horizons Youth Services (HYS) celebrated Earth Day, April 22, 2013 and during the week of April 22-26, 2013. The Center kicked off activities with a student and staff assembly that featured information regarding the theme of Earth Day 2013 – Climate Change and watched Al Gore’s Project “The Price of Carbon” with Reggie Watts. During the afternoon, students from the Facilities Maintenance class cleaned, weeded, and restored a community garden at the Bob Burdette Center at Emmanuel Baptist Church on the Charleston’s West Side. Loren Friend, Director of the Bob Burdette Center’s After School program and member of the CJCC Community Relations Council stated, “The students did a good job.” Tuesday, April 23, 2013 Facilities Maintenance students also celebrated Earth Day by improving the landscaping at the Women’s Club of Charleston on Virginia Street East. Students removed debris, mulched, and planted flowers. Rita Dobrich, Club President and member of the center’s Community Relations Council stated, “We really appreciate the help.”
