Charleston Job Corps Center Celebrates Dr. MLK Day-Jan. 29, 2014

The Charleston Job Corps Center (CJCC) operated by Horizons Youth Services (HYS), hosted a center wide Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. The Recreation Department sponsored the program under the direction of Mr. James Carter, Leadership Time Coordinator. Mrs. Tia Welch, Business Community Liaison served as mistress of ceremony and the Keynote Speaker was Rev. Matthew J. Watts, Senior Pastor of Grace Bible Church, Charleston, WV and CEO HOPE Community Development Corporation, a non-profit organization with the mission of empowering the inner city through spiritual renewal, education, employment and training and economic development. Pastor Watts spoke candidly about his upbringing and personal experiences that have shaped him into the man he is today, and why he has felt such a “fierce, sense of urgency” most of his life. He stressed that time waits for no one, and that students should take advantage of today’s opportunities by applying themselves in their trades and academic studies. He stated, “I love coming to the hill, you can feel the energy when you get here.” The Charleston Job Corps Center choir performed a selection during the ceremony. Center Director, Mr. Willie Brown, closed the observance with the last words of Dr. Martin Luther King’s, “I Have a Dream Speech” with students and staff in chorus, “Free at Last, Free at Last, Thank God all Mighty I am Free Last.”
