Charleston Job Corps Alumni of the Month

Charleston Job Corps Student Alumni of the Month, Jamonte Hunnicutt of Richmond, Virginia, arrived at Charleston Job Corps simply looking for a better life.
After high school, Hunnicutt found employment in the food industry and soon felt trapped at a dead end. He realized, there must be career and training opportunities available and found Job Corps. Jamonte earned his Pharmacy Technician certification through our partnership with Bridge Valley Community and Technical College. However, unsure of which career path to choose, he decided to pursue other industry options and earned additional certifications during his tenure. Although his priority was achieving student success, his activities were numerous which included being a member of the Student Government Association, dorm leadership, member of the softball team, and peer mentoring

Jamonte is currently a truck driver for Abilene Motor Express. A skill he obtained shortly after completing Job Corps. When asked about the benefits of the program, he laughed and said, “I didn’t realize all of the benefits Job Corps provided. Job Corps prepared me for real-world life situations.” He further said Job Corps taught him independent living skills, interviewing skills, punctuality, professionalism, the importance of employability skills, and most importantly, his trade skills. He enthusiastically added, Job Corps also led to the love of his life.

My life after Job Corps has been wonderful and fulfilling. I have my own vehicle, and home, a fiancé, a son, and a daughter on the way. Thanks to Job Corps I now know the importance of being a valued member of my community and society.
